Biographies
Charlie (guitar, shouting in key):
Charlie has vague memories of playing guitar in the bars and
road houses of southern Ontario in the early seventies in bands
like Tattoo and Ruby Ashton (aka Zeke). Charlie played in
perhaps one too many bar band campaigns across southern
Ontario in glamorous locations like Etobicoke, Loretto
Orangeville, Coboconk, Woodbridge, Lindsay and Port
McNichol to name but a few. Scotty, Dennis, Charlie, Zeke
and Barrie cut a wide swath through the 'B circuit' back in the
day playing tunes by Mott the Hoople, Lou Reed, Babe Ruth,
Bowie and the Stones . Tales of a reunion tour are but hushed
murmurs of a slightly dazed and faded but glimmering memory.
fulfillment. He continued to dabble in music, but tended to focus on more obscure, esoteric genres
and generally kept to himself musically. He did however, develop a deep fascination with vintage
electronic equipment and 'music the radio won't play', quirks which serve him well today.
When prodded, Charlie will cite six-string razor and gee-tar influences such as Rory Gallagher, Steve
Cropper, Ramblin' Jack Elliot, Gurf Morlix, Johnny Thunders, Keef, and Link Wray. Musicians like
Blind Willie Johnson, Mississippi John Hurt, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Lowell George, Lucinda
Williams, Rollo Thomassi, Steve Earle, Alejandro Escovedo and, of course, Bob Dylan are on
Charlie's list of long-standing inspirations and persistent influences.
Charlie is quick to credit Cate with his current musical resurrection. A serendipitous encounter in
2004 led Cate and Charlie to develop a vision and plan to perform as a duo and develop a core of
material. The plan also included expanding from a duo to add other musicians as opportunities
arose and soon enough keyboards, bass and drums were added to the mix. Regular gigs in bars and
at private events in Alberta and B.C, allowed band an opportunity to develop and fine-tune what is
now Vagabond Blonde.
Overall, Charlie's life and musical ambition is '...to break even'.
